The estimated annual production of fruits and vegetables in the country is about 130 million tonnes. Other times, we maintain the drive to push on, despite other interests, temptations, and distractions. We don’t have the willpower to stick to the diet or get to the gym. Sometimes, because of the ongoing competition within our brains, we fail. Finally, in the middle, but lower down in our prefrontal cortex, the cells fire to keep us motivated and in line with our goals (I want) (McGonigal, 2013). The left side of this brain region helps us stick to tasks (I will)–even boring ones–while the right side (I will not) stops us from being distracted or giving in to temptation. It has three key areas, each one helping us weigh up whether “I will,” “I will not,” or “I want” to do something. So, when we put things off, watching TV instead of completing the tax form, that’s our prefrontal cortex at work.Īnd yet, this part of the brain is more than a single unified decision-maker. It directs what we pay attention to and think about–and even the emotions we experience (McGonigal, 2013). The novel had its pro's and con's but overall veered towards being a positive experience. These characters are flawed, exemplify sixteen-year-old nature, and heighten the story they are worth reading.ĭespite the preposterousness of the situation, These Deadly Games was fun to read. Their personal relationship to Crystal intensifies her choices and you can feel the pain from these choices both from her and her friends. ![]() They act like sixteen-year-old's and that's a good thing, because they are. The supporting characters like Crystal, are flawed. It was kind of creepy but showed that although selfish and stubborn, she wasn't making moves just to push the story along, they made sense with who she was even if the decision was the absolutely wrong one. ![]() My favourite part of Crystal and could be yours too is that every time I wondered why she hadn't considered something, within a page or two, she was analysing the scenario the way I considered. This is like the trolly problem, to save one do you sacrifice five or to save five do you sacrifice one, except the one is your sister and the five are your friends? How she projects her emotions is valid within the scope of a YA and is why she makes a good protagonist. Crystal puts herself first because she is selfish her need to save her sister trumps her friends needs. I appreciate a flawed character and multiple flawed characters? Yes please, especially when they are selfish. ![]() ![]() It perhaps takes the eyes of a childfree person to see how child-centric our culture truly is. They range from people who genuinely enjoy being around children-and just don't want any of their own-to those who find kids annoying and stress-inducing and don't wish to be around them at all. ![]() It's really more of a collection of stories form others who have chosen to be child free, presented in a way that lets you know that you're not alone in your decision and that others have "been there".Ĭhildfree people are those who choose not to have children. I think this book is very fair and it's not anti-parenthood in any way. Yet, no one ever asks "WHY?!" when someone announces that they want to have children - largely because it's a decision that many people make without ever giving it any real thought. Because, as many of you know, the instant you identify yourself as child free, you will immediately be asked "WHY?!" and you will be expected to defend your position almost as though you've committed a criminal act. One of the things I liked most about this book is the way it underscores the fact that people who have chosen to be child free do so after giving the whole notion a great deal of thoughtful consideration. I even think many parents could benefit from reading this, as it highlights many of the stereotypes, misconceptions and prejudices against child free people. This is a great resource for anyone who has chosen to be child free (you're not alone!), as well as those who may be on the fence about whether they want to have children or not. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I hadn’t realized until we chatted recently that movie-making has always been her secret love. Still, despite all her success as a novelist, Francesca wanted to work on her screenwriting chops, with the goal of adapting the original Weetzie Bat story - now called Dangerous Angels - for the screen. Coming up next year is the latest entry in the Weetzie Bat saga, Pink Smog. I’ve heard librarians refer to Weetzie Bat as “a modern classic.” Since its publication, she has written a host of other books, most set in a gaudy, glittering version of L.A.
